Submitting Transcripts to Rackham

The Rackham Graduate School requires all applicants to submit official academic records/transcripts from the institution from which you received or will receive a Bachelor's, Master's, Professional, or Doctoral degree. It is important to follow these instructions to allow the Rackham Graduate School to process your documents as quickly as possible.

Use our Department Information Guide and navigate to the graduate program's website to find the specific instructions for what to provide to your intended program.

When, how and where are transcripts sent?

Academic records/transcripts must be submitted prior to the graduate program deadline date, through:

1) The online application

  • To expedite the processing of your online application, you are encouraged to include a scanned image of your academic record/transcript(s) with the online application. The graduate program admissions committee is able to make a preliminary decision based upon your submission of a scanned transcript.
  • A scanned copy of an official student copy, provided to you by the Registrar's Office, is acceptable. Unofficial transcripts printed from your institution's student portal (a screen print of a transcript) are not acceptable.
  • Scanned images of official transcripts that are uploaded into the online application will be considered unofficial.
  • Refer to instructions on the graduate program's website to determine whether official transcripts should be mailed to the graduate program after the scanned images are submitted through the online application.

2) The mail

All applicants are required to mail 1 set of official academic records/transcripts representing a Bachelor's, Master's, Professional and/or Doctoral degree to:

Do not send transcripts from a Community or Junior College, non-degree study or study abroad coursework to the Rackham Graduate School.

To ensure that Rackham can match your academic records/transcripts to your application you must include your date of birth or UM ID# with all academic records/transcripts.

From U.S. Institutions

If your name as it appears on your academic records/transcripts is the same as the name that appears on your application: Provide your Date of Birth (mm/dd/yyyy) in the address as noted below.

If your name as it appears on your academic records/transcripts is different from the name that appears on your application (e.g.: due to a name change): Provide a UM ID#, obtain a U-M ID#, or in the address field provide your current last name and Date of Birth (mm/dd/yyyy).

From Non-U.S. Institutions

Submit the Academic Records/Transcript Submission Form with your official academic records/transcripts.

What transcripts are required?

Bachelor's, Master's, Professional and Doctoral degree academic records/transcripts are required. Specific types of academic records/transcripts are required based upon the country where the degree was received.

United States

What type of academic records/transcripts to submit if you attended an undergraduate or postgraduate institution in the United States?

Current or Previous University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Students

Current or previous University of Michigan, Ann Arbor students should not submit paper copies of University of Michigan transcripts to Rackham. Rackham will obtain the transcript from the University Registrar's Office after the application has been submitted.

Current or previous University of Michigan, Dearborn or Flint students are required to mail 1 set of official transcripts that represent a Bachelor's, Master's, Professional and or Doctoral degree to:

Applicants who have attended other schools/colleges/universities in the United States

You are required to mail 1 set of official transcripts that represent a Bachelor's, Master's, Professional or a Doctoral degree to the Rackham Graduate School. Use our Department Information Guide to navigate to the graduate program's website to find specific instructions for what information or materials to provide to your intended program.

Official documents must be provided by the institution awarding the degree. Academic records certified by notary publics are not official. In order to be considered official, all academic records/transcripts must bear a seal, and the signature, in ink, of an authorized official of the institution (such as the Registrar or Recorder of Records).

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka

What type of academic records/transcripts to submit if you attended an undergraduate or postgraduate institution in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka:

You are required to mail 1 set of official final mark sheets from all semesters and diplomas indicating conferral of your bachelor's degree to the Rackham Graduate School. Provisional Certificates are not acceptable. Official documents must be provided by the institution awarding the degree. Submit the Academic Records/Transcript Submission Form with your official academic records/transcripts. In order to be considered official, all academic records/transcripts must bear a seal, and the signature, in ink, of an authorized official of the institution (such as the Registrar or Recorder of Records). People's Republic of China

What type of academic records/transcripts to submit if you attended an undergraduate or postgraduate institution in the People's Republic of China:

You are required to mail 1 set of official academic records to the Rackham Graduate School. This set must include two versions of your official, final transcript, Certificates of Graduation, and Degree Certificates; one version must be in Chinese and one version must be an official English translation. Official documents must be provided from the institution awarding the degree. Submit the Academic Records/Transcript Submission Form with your official academic records/transcripts. Use our Department Information Guide to navigate to the graduate program's website to find specific instructions for what information or materials to provide to your intended program.

In order to be considered official, all academic records/transcripts must bear a seal, and a signature, in ink, of an authorized official of the institution (such as the Registrar or Recorder of Records). What type of academic records/transcripts to submit if you attended an undergraduate or postgraduate institution in Puerto Rico, Europe, South America, East & Central Europe, Asia or the Middle East:

You are required to mail 1 set of official academic records to the Rackham Graduate School. This set must include two versions of your official, final transcripts and diplomas; one version must be in the native language and one version must be an official English translation. Official documents must be provided from the institution awarding the degree. Submit the Academic Records/Transcript Submission Form with your official academic records/transcripts. Outside of the United States Where the Official Language of the Institution is English Exclusively

What type of academic records/transcripts to submit if you attended an undergraduate or postgraduate institution outside of the United States where the official language of the institution is English exclusively:

You are required to mail 1 set of official final transcripts and diplomas to the Rackham Graduate School. Official documents must be provided from the institution awarding the degree. Submit the Academic Records/Transcript Submission Form with your official academic records/transcripts. Use our Department Information Guide to navigate to the graduate program's website to find specific instructions for what information or materials to provide to your intended program.

Bologna Degree

What type of academic records/transcripts to submit if you attended an undergraduate or postgraduate institution in a country that awards a Bologna degree?

You are required to mail 1 set of official diploma supplements, official academic records/transcripts and diplomas in the native language and official translations of all documents to the Rackham Graduate School. If you attended more than one institution to complete degree requirements, (example: ERASMUS/exchange program), you must submit official academic records from all institutions at which you completed coursework toward the degree. Submit the Academic Records/Transcript Submission Form with your official academic records/transcripts.

Use our Department Information Guide to navigate to the graduate program's website to find specific instructions for what information or materials to provide to your intended program. Applicants whose educational experiences include a Bologna degree will be reviewed on a case by case basis to determine eligibility. You must include the diploma supplement when submitting your official transcripts and diploma.

How are transcripts used?

Rackham will certify the authenticity of the records, the academic standing (GPA), and accreditation of the school(s) you attended using official academic records/transcripts for coursework completed through:

  • Bachelor's
  • Master's
  • Professional or
  • Doctoral degree study

Do not send transcripts from Community or Junior College, non-degree study or study abroad coursework to the Rackham Graduate School.

Unofficial academic records/transcripts will not be processed. An example of an unofficial academic record/transcript is a copy or a form not produced by the school registrar.
