How does the application process work for an applicant seeking Degree Status?

The following is a flow chart that is intended to be a representation of the application process:

The Prospective Applicant

Reviews the Department Information Guide to obtain graduate program:

  • Deadlines
  • Contact Information
  • Website links

Reviews the Rackham Graduate School website.

Review these sites carefully. Failure to follow the directions will result in a delay or your application not being considered.

The Prospective Applicant

Registers their personal and academic background information with Rackham by registering as a Future Grad Student.

The Benefit of Registering?

  • You'll be assigned a University of Michigan ID number. This is your first official connection to the University of Michigan.
  • You will receive your University of Michigan ID number approximately 7-10 business days after you register as a Future Rackham Graduate Student.
  • Processing of application and application documents occurs more quickly. Indicating your University of Michigan ID on your application and application documents allows your records to be matched and processed more quickly!

The Prospective Applicant

Requests 2 sets of official academic records/transcripts from undergraduate and graduate institutions.

The Prospective Applicant

Requests official test scores.

  • Test scores must be sent by the testing agency and must arrive at U-M prior to the graduate program's deadline date. Use our Department Information Guide to navigate to the graduate program's website for details on what tests are required.

Submits the application.

  • Submit the application 2-3 weeks before the graduate program's deadline date. Submit the application before your transcripts are mailed to Rackham Graduate School Admissions and the graduate program. Early submission may avoid unnecessary delays.
  • Documents that must be submitted through the application.
  • REGISTER: Names of recommenders, using the button '5 Recommendations' on the sidebar of the application. The recommenders will receive access to submit letters of recommendation electronically.
  • A credit card is required to submit the application.
  • Approved Fee Waivers and Need Based Fee Grants may be used to submit the application.

Dial-up connections are not the best method for working on the application. Users may experience trouble uploading required documents.

The Rackham Graduate School

  • Receives the application.
  • Sends an e-mail acknowledging receipt of the application.
  • Directs applicants to Wolverine Access to verify the data submitted and to update their address, phone numbers and e-mail address as necessary.

The Graduate Program

  • Receives the application.
  • Communicates with the applicant and acknowledges receipt of the application data.

The Applicant

  • Creates a University of Michigan Friend Account.
  • Uses the Wolverine Access site to confirm data submitted and updates their address, phone number, and e-mail address as necessary.
  • Your data will be available to you in Wolverine Access after the Rackham Graduate School sends the acknowledgement e-mail that directs you to this system.

Note: Academic records/transcripts received by Rackham Graduate School Admissions will not appear in Wolverine Access. If these documents are missing at the time we review your file we will contact you.

Follow These Directions:

You will need to use a login ID and password, and confirm some personal data before viewing your application data.

For applicants who are current students or employees: Log into Wolverine Access using your existing U-M uniqname login and click New and Prospective Student Business.

For applicants new to the University, this is a 2-step process:

  • Log into Wolverine Access (U-M administrative services)
    After you create your U-M Friend Account view your application data and click New and Prospective Student Business.

You will need your U-M ID number in order to access Wolverine Access. Your U-M ID number is sent to you after you register as a Future Grad Student. It is also sent to you in the acknowledgement e-mail from Rackham.

The Applicant sends to the Rackham Graduate School

Note: Some graduate programs require all materials to be sent to their office. Check the graduate program's website for specific instructions.

Use our Department Information Guide to navigate to the graduate program's website for details on the submission of your official transcripts.

If the graduate program instructs you to mail your academic records/transcripts to Rackham Graduate School Admissions:

  • Submit one set of official transcripts of courses taken and grades received at each post-secondary institution attended/attending and at any international institutions (if you have completed or are completing a degree program at any international institution).
  • Submit the Application before the academic records/transcripts are received by Rackham and the graduate program to allow your documents to be processed more quickly.

Note: If you have received your U-M ID#, when mailing your transcripts to Rackham Graduate School Admissions, always include your University of Michigan ID number (U-M ID#) in the mailing address. Including the U-M ID# will allow your transcripts to be matched to your application and processed more quickly.

If you do not have a U-M ID#, you can obtain one by registering as a Future Grad Student.

The Benefits of Registering? 

  • The processing of your application and applications documents occurs more quickly. Indicating your University of Michigan ID on your application and application documents allows your records to be matched and processed more quickly!

It takes 7-10 days to generate a University of Michigan ID#. If your program's deadline date is within 7-10 days, submit your documents with your date of birth and the name of the program that you are applying to.

The Applicant Sends to the Graduate Program

One set of official transcripts of courses taken and grades received at each post-secondary institution attended/attending and at any international institutions (if you have completed or are completing a degree program at any international institution).

Any other documents required by the graduate program.

The Graduate Program

  • Receives and reviews the materials submitted by the applicant.
  • Makes a decision to recommend or deny admission.
  • Informs Rackham of the decision.
  • Communicates the decision to the applicant.

The Rackham Graduate School

  • Reviews the recommendations of admission received from the graduate program.
  • Communicates with the applicant by e-mail, as necessary, during the review process.
  • Certifies and processes the admission recommendation.
  • Notifies the applicant, by e-mail, of the admission.
  • Directs the applicant to review the online pre-enrollment information
  • Directs the applicant to accept or decline the offer of admission at Wolverine Access.
  • Admitted non-U.S. Citizens who are F-1 and J-1 visa holders will receive an Affidavit of Financial Resources form from Rackham.

The Admitted Applicant

  • Views the pre-enrollment information on the Rackham Graduate School website.
  • Accepts or declines the offer of admission using Wolverine Access.

Admitted Non-U.S. Citizens Who Have Accepted the Offer of Admission

  • Send Rackham the Affidavit of Financial Resources and financial certification documents. Rackham prepares and mails the immigration documents

University of Michigan

  • Sends the Computer Access information by e-mail to applicants who have accepted the offer of admission.

As soon as new incoming students have matriculated, they receive a letter giving them a "one-time identifier." The new students can then use Wolverine Access to get to a web page where they use their one-time identifier, U-M ID number, and date of birth to get their uniqname and password. At that point, the Basic Computing Package (BCP) is set up for them.

The Admitted and Matriculated Applicant

  • Receives the Uniqname/Computer Access e-mail. Follows the steps to create a Uniqname and establish Computer Access.
  • Begins the process of registering for classes based on graduate program instructions.
  • Attends orientation sessions as appropriate and required by the graduate program, Rackham, the International Center, and other University of Michigan offices.
