Instructions for Computing US Grade-Point-Average (GPA)

Step 1: Determine if You Need to Calculate Grade Point Average

Did you attend an institution overseas?

If you have attended or are currently attending an institution overseas you are not required to calculate a GPA.

Did you attend an institution in the United States?

If you earned or will earn a U.S. undergraduate or graduate degree you should enter the overall cumulative grade point average (GPA) as it appears on your transcript. Please indicate the scale used (e.g., 4.4 on a 5.0 scale).

If your official transcript does not give a cumulative GPA, please follow the instructions given below to calculate your grade point average.

Step 2: Calculating Your Grade Point Average

  • Grade point average is the total of "Honor" points divided by the total number of credit hours or units.
  • If there are no credit hours list each course as 1 unit.
  • "Honor" points (HP) = credit hours (or units) × grade.

Number Values for Letter Grades

Letter Grade   Number Value
A+ = 4.3
A = 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3.0
B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3
C = 2.0
C- = 1.7
D+ = 1.3
D = 1.0
D- = 0.7

Calculation Example

  Hours × Number Value   Honor Points
  3 hours × 4.0 (A) = 12.0 honor points
  2 hours × 3.7 (A-) = 7.4 honor points
  4 hours × 3.3 (B+) = 13.2 honor points

Total 9 hours   32.6 honor points
GPA 32.6 honor points divided by 9 hours = 3.622 GPA
