Sources of Aid on Campus

There are many sources of information on financial assistance available to University of Michigan students. Listed below are some places students can look for aid on the University of Michigan campus. In addition to checking out campus resources, be sure to contact foundations, religious organizations, fraternities or sororities, and town or city clubs. Include community organizations and civic groups such as YMCA, 4-H Club. Kiwanis, Rotary, American Legion and the Scouts. Don't overlook any organizations connected with your field of interest as a potential source of funding.

Rackham

The Rackham Fellowships Office administers many fellowships for Rackham graduate students.

Programs

Students are encouraged to contact the graduate program coordinator or financial aid assistant in their respective program as many have funds to assist students. These funds may be in the form of grants, fellowships, research and teaching assistantships.

Office of Financial Aid

All graduate students, with the exception of those in the Law School and Medical School, may apply for Work-Study and/or loan assistance through the Office of Financial Aid (OFA). Loan programs available include the Federal Perkins Loan and Federal Stafford Loan programs. This office also offers short-term, emergency loans. Additionally, they have the Graduate PLUS program which is a non-need-based federal loan that allows graduate students to borrow up to the full cost of attendance, minus any other financial aid they are receiving. Student Employment

The Student Employment Office administers Federal College Work-Study (federally-funded) and Michigan Work-Study (state-funded) programs to provide part-time jobs for eligible students. To qualify, students must apply for financial aid through the Office of Financial Aid, be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, enrolled full-time, and able to demonstrate financial need. Honors Office

This office administers the Marshall Scholarships for study at a British University, the Rhodes Scholarships for study at Oxford University, and the Churchill Scholarship for one year of graduate study at Cambridge University. Mellon Fellowships can also be applied for through the Honors Office. Interested students may inquire at 1228 Angell Hall or call (734) 764-6274.

Center for the Education of Women (CEW)

The Center for the Education of Women is located in the Michigan Square Building at 330 E. Liberty (near Division). CEW provides counseling and information on academic programs, child care, community resources and job searches. They also maintain a loan and reference library. The annual CEW scholarship competition provides over 30 awards. Small emergency grants are also available. For more information, call CEW at (734) 764-7271 or visit the CEW website.

International Center

The Center's Overseas Opportunities Office advises students seeking opportunities outside the U.S. and provides information on study abroad programs, employment abroad, the Peace Corps volunteer program, and other overseas volunteer opportunities. The International Center also offers many services for new international students, such as programs to help orient and assimilate students new to the United States and information programs on fellowship and scholarship opportunities for international graduate and undergraduate students. International Institute

The Institute promotes the advancement across the University of international and area research and training, and provides resources for the development of study and research. Funding opportunities include graduate fellowships, funds for development of conferences and workshops, study abroad programs, and many other programs. To be eligible, students must be registered with the Institute, and registered for the term for which they request support. Library

The Reference Room on the second floor of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library has a wide selection of books pertaining to fellowships, scholarships, and grants. Ask for the Information and Reference Center flyer, "Sources of Information and Loans on Scholarships, Fellowships and Research Grants." The library also has some fellowship listings online. Employment

Sources for jobs are the federal government, the University of Michigan, and public and private employers on and off campus. Many jobs, in addition to work-study employment, are available, and financial aid is not generally a factor in selection. Don't forget to check the local online news sources for off-campus jobs. Jobs Listings at the University of Michigan are available online and are updated weekly. Services for Students with Disabilities

Located in G664 Haven Hall (734) 763-3000, this office provides equipment loans, volunteer readers, note takers and transportation services for students with temporary and permanent disabilities. Veterans Affairs

Students who are eligible to receive veteran's benefits may contact the central campus office at 413 E. Huron Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48104-1520 (734) 764-1575 or the north campus office at B430 Pierpont Commons 763-7650 for assistance in processing the necessary certification paperwork in order to receive benefits.

Division of Reasearch Development and Administration (DRDA)

On the DRDA website, under Sponsored Programs > Funding, links are available to databases with information about postdoctoral fellowships offered by federal agencies and private and corporate foundations. One such database is called SPIN, or Sponsored Program Information Network. There are tips for conducting such searches for postdoctoral support. Rackham maintains a listing of some of the postdoctoral positions available at the University of Michigan at the Postdoctoral Job Postings List. Such positions are determined by individual faculty, departments and colleges. Check with the program or laboratory where you are interested in working. Visit the site at www.research.umich.edu.
