  1. Degrees are conferred by the University of Michigan Board of Regents three times a year. You may participate in commencement on or after the conferral date when all requirements have been completed.
  2. A doctoral student must be enrolled for eight hours of candidacy during the term in which s/he defends. The defense must take place no later than the last day of exams in that term unless you have been granted an extension. To be granted an extension, your Chair must send an e-mail to OARD.staff@umich.edu requesting an extension for you to defend after the end of the term, and affirming that that you will have all corrections, revisions and other requirements completed by the deadline for the term in which you registered to defend. It is advisable that this e-mail be submitted to OARD at the time of your pre-dissertation defense meeting.
  3. A new registration is needed if requirements are not met by this date.
  4. Note that most students require two weeks or more to make revisions and therefore could not defend and finish on the same day.
