Instructions for First Time Enrollee Applicants Whose Native Language Is Not English
In addition to the Minimum Rackham Graduate School Requirements for Admission, you must also fulfill the following requirements:
- Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency. Applicants are required to provide an official score report from either the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS), or the Examination for the Michigan Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE).
- TOEFL scores are sent electronically from ETS directly to the University of Michigan (institution code: 1839). Official ECPE, IELTS and MELAB scores must be sent directly to the Rackham Graduate School.
- Test scores are valid two years from the test date.
- Test scores may be reported before the application is submitted if the first and last name and date of birth in the test are exactly the same as in the application.

The Rackham Graduate School's English Proficiency Exemptions
- Applicants who have earned or will earn a Bachelor or Master degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English, exclusively, are exempt from submitting an Official English Proficiency Score. Verification from the school may be required.
- Applicants who have earned or will earn a Bachelor of Master degree from a country where the official language is English, (United States of America, Australia, England) are exempt from submitting an Official English Proficiency Score.
Graduate Program English Proficiency Requirements
The English Proficiency requirements of the graduate program may be different from the Rackham Graduate School English proficiency requirements. In this case, the graduate program's English proficiency requirements must be followed and take priority over the Rackham Graduate School's English Proficiency requirements. Program specific requirements can be reviewed by navigating to our Programs of Study section.
The Academic English Evaluation (AEE)
The Official Rackham Graduate School admission letter will indicate under "condition for admission", if applicants are required to have their English re-evaluated by taking the Academic English Evaluation (AEE) upon their arrival to campus before classes begin.
AEE does not replace the requirement of providing ECPE, IELTS, MELAB or TOEFL score.
The table below indicates when the AEE will be required upon the arrival to campus.
