Minimum Requirements for Admission

Applicants are required to meet two sets of minimum qualifications for admission: those of the graduate program and the minimum requirements of the Rackham Graduate School. For more information on graduate program requirements, including minimum requirements for the GRE score, please see the Graduate Program requirements and deadline section.

Minimum Requirements for Admission

The minimum requirements for admission to the Rackham Graduate School are:

  • All applicants must have a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution.

If your degree is from a U.S. college or school, the institution must be approved by one of the following U.S. Regional Accrediting Bodies:

  • Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
  • New England Association of Colleges and Schools
  • North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
  • Northwest Association of Colleges and Schools
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
  • Western Association of Colleges and Schools

If your degree is from a non-U.S. college or school, the institution must be recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.

English Proficiency

Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency. Applicants are required to provide an official score report from either the Michigan English Language Battery (MELAB), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS), or the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE). Photocopies and/or faxes of English proficiency scores will not be accepted.

MELAB, TOEFL, IELTS, and ECPE

Minimum score requirements for the MELAB, TOEFL, IELTS, and ECPE test can be found in the section: Applicants Whose Native Language is Not English.

Applicants who have earned a degree from an institution where the language of instruction is exclusively English, (e.g.:. U.S., United Kingdom, Australia) are exempt from submitting a MELAB, TOEFL, IELTS, or ECPE score.

Some Graduate Programs Have Higher Minimum Score Requirements

Some graduate programs have higher minimum score requirements. In these situations the program's requirements must be followed. Program-specific requirements can be accessed by navigating to our Programs of Study section.
